Glitzy, glittery, golden, or glamorous. Snazzy, shimmery, silver, or shiny. The only thing more plentiful than the simple earring’s spectrum of styles is the collection of adjectives used to describe it. Yes, with everything from tiny studs to shoulder-brushing chandeliers made with every possible material ranging from classic diamonds to hot pink plastic, choosing a new pair is no easy feat.

So, how do you go about selecting the earrings that will suit you best? Simple. Don’t head for the jewelry counter until you have considered the following.
In case you hadn’t yet noticed, your face is not merely “face-shaped.” In fact, it likely falls into one of the following categories: oval, round, heart-shaped, square, or oblong.
Another thing to consider when selecting earrings is the length of your hair. If your hair is short and your lobes are clearly visible, pretty much any style from tiny birthstones to statement stud earrings to behemoth chandeliers will do. If your lobes, however, are hidden, you should opt for longer earrings that will be visible. After all, if they’re going to be hidden–what’s the point? To make sure that your earrings really pop against a background of flowing tresses, select a pair with extra sparkle. And, if you have your heart set on a classic stud simply wear your hair up and expose those ears.
When selecting an earring, it is important to also consider the length of your neck and, therefore, your height. If you boast a long neck, you are better able to pull off long earrings and styles that are heavier looking. Large hoops, chunky drops, and broader chandeliers will all benefit from the greater expanse between your ear and shoulder. On the flip side, demure studs and short dainty pieces may go unnoticed.
Petite individuals should avoid earrings that touch the shoulder–which may rule out many chandeliers and long dangles. Also avoid large 1980s-ish styles as they will be too overpowering.
Your current collection
When choosing a new pair of earrings, you may also wish to consider the other pieces that you have at home. Do you have a necklace that will match? Or the perfect complimentary bracelet? If the earrings are not a stand-alone piece and you don’t have a thing to go with them, you may need to invest in a suitable match.
Your personal style
Perhaps, you are a natural born rule-breaker and pooh-pooh the limitations presented by face shapes, hair lengths, and statures. If so, look for a pair of earrings that suits your personality and sense of style. And don’t panic if you’ve fallen in love with a cute pair of yellow buttons, but your face is full and round. Do whatever makes you happy.
Yes, by following a few simple guidelines, you will be better able to whittle down your choices and pick a style that will grace your lobes for years to come. And look beautiful doing it.
