It’s true. The world of Information Technology–frequently referred to as “IT”–changes at a dizzying pace. It is not unusual for one year’s most coveted skill to become redundant twelve months later. How can a person be sure that they have the most current know-how to land a great IT job in the here and now?
Thankfully, industry experts–including those that engage in hiring–are eager to share their picks for the year’s hottest skills sets and fastest growing employment areas.
Having the most relevant skills will put you ahead of the competition.
Yes, the world of IT encompasses a plethora of different jobs in a vast array of industries and it can be challenging to decide which area of this diverse field best suits you. Thankfully, as Carole Oldroyd writes in her article “4 Advantages of a Degree in Information Technology,” an educational background in IT “could prove valuable to a lot of different people with a wide range of goals.” But, if landing a great job as quickly as possible is your goal, here are some of the hottest jobs and skill sets in the current job market.
1. Application Developer
Computerworld‘s 2014 Forecast survey places Programming/Application Developers at the top of the list when it comes to anticipated hires over the next twelve months. CNN and Mashable concur that specialists in this area will be highly coveted by employers as more and more people go mobile. Some in-demand qualifications for work in this area include experience creating iOS or Android apps, and expertise with Eclipse or Worklight Studio.
2. Help Desk/Tech Support
With new technologies developing almost daily and an often overwhelmed population trying to keep on top of them, there is an ever-increasing demand for help desk and technical support people. Computerworld ranked this job area as the second most promising, a slight increase over its number three spot the previous year. If you wish to secure one of these positions, it will be helpful to become certified in PMP, HDI, or ITIL.
3. Database Administrator
Appearing on multiple Top 10 Hot Job lists, the position of Database Administrator owes its demand to the blossoming interest in “all things Big Data.” The hottest tickets will be those who boast experience as Database Architects, Oracle Database Administrators, or individuals who are proficient in .NET, SQL, or Java.
4. Project Manager
While not as in-demand as last year, this position continues to be a hotter IT career choice than most. Let’s face it–a company’s investments in business technology can be quite sizeable. As a result, there is a huge need for Project Managers who can oversee the success and fiscal management of these ventures. If you want to land a position in this field, you will need to obtain certification in APICS, PMP, or PMI. In InformationWeek‘s “8 Hot IT Jobs for 2014,” Modis President, Jack Cullen, states that specialization in areas like “derivatives, capital markets, and low latency-high frequency experience” are very much in demand.
According to the Senior Executive Director of Robert Half Technology, John Reed, skills in data science, data engineering, and database development are also very marketable.
The right skills will make you stand out from everyone else.
Arming yourself with the most coveted skills will help you land one of IT’s hottest careers and set you on the path to an exciting and successful future. And the time to acquire those skills is now.
What is your dream IT career? What skills will you need to perfect in order to land that job?
