After a long day at work, you just want to throw on a pair of shorts and sit on the deck with a frosty mug of Heineken and put your feet up. But, how can you relax when you are being harassed by your not-so-friendly neighborhood wasps?
This is your yard and those stinger-wielding pests are making it impossible for you to enjoy it. It’s high time you take action and show the local wasp population who’s boss. Yes, it’s time to declare war.
Before waging war on your enemy, make sure that you are equipped for the job. First of all, if you are allergic to wasp stings, you will need to call in the big gun–the exterminator. After all, this is not a suicide mission.
Even if you are not allergic to stings, you will want to wear protective gear. This means covering yourself up completely. Wear long pants that you can tuck into your socks or boots, a hoodie with the hood up, a scarf over your face and protective eye wear. And, according to the Daily Mail, wasps are attracted to certain colors such as white and yellow, but cannot see the color red–making an outfit of crimson or poppy an ideal wasp-tackling choice.
And, never stand on a ladder when attempting to remove a wasps’ nest. If you find yourself face-to-face with an angry swarm, you don’t want to be precariously perched several feet in the air.
Before launching a full-scale attack, ensure that you are targeting the right enemy. You do not want to eliminate bees by mistake as these beneficial insects are expert pollinators responsible for propagating many important food crops. There are many online resources available to help you better identify which black and yellow bug is residing on your property, including “What’s the Difference Between Bees and Wasps.”
To launch a successful assault on the enemy, you need to catch them ill-prepared to fight back. This involves perfect timing.
It is wise to remove nests as early in the year as possible, before the new colony is fully established. Night time is also the right time to engage in any wasp removal work as this is when they are much less active. If you attempt to remove a nest in the middle of the day, you are much more likely to encounter a sting or two–or twenty.
And, never use a regular flashlight as illumination as this is like wearing a giant bull’s eye. Instead, operate at dusk or dawn when you have some natural lighting.
Your choice of weapon depends on whether or not the nest is a hanging type or one found in holes or crevices.
Wasps are extremely territorial and do not play well with others. A great way to ensure that your yard remains wasp-free is to hang a fake nest. According to “Stop Wasps in Their Tracks This Summer,” purchasing these paper lantern-like decoys and placing them in areas that may be attractive to these winged pests will prevent them from establishing a colony within your property lines.
With some careful planning and well-executed attacks, you can reclaim your back yard and enjoy your summer in peace. So pop the lid off a cold one and breathe a sigh of relief. The battle has been won.
What tips can you offer someone attempting to remove a pesky wasp nest?
